What Is Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews is a feature that shows an AI generated summary above the normal list of search results for many queries, pulling together information from several sources into one written answer, often with a small set of linked citations underneath.
How it fits into a Google search
Instead of only showing ten blue links, Google now often shows a generated paragraph or two at the very top of the page for questions it judges are well suited to a direct, synthesized answer, followed by the normal results below it for anyone who wants to dig further.
How it picks sources
It draws on Google's existing search index and, similar to a featured snippet, tends to favor pages that already rank well and answer the question clearly and directly. Being cited in an AI Overview does not require anything you would not already want for good SEO: clear, accurate, well structured content.
Why it changes the stakes
- It sits above every other result, so a poor showing here affects visibility even for a page that ranks well normally
- Clicking through becomes optional for the searcher, since the summary itself often answers the question
- Being one of the two or three cited sources matters more than being technically ranked first, since the summary does not list every source that could have answered the question
