AI Overviews vs Traditional Search Results

Traditional Google results are a ranked list of links you scan and choose from. AI Overviews sit above that list and answer the question directly in a short, generated paragraph, citing only a handful of sources. Ranking well in the traditional results no longer guarantees you are one of the few sources the Overview actually names.

Two systems, one search

For many queries, both now appear on the same results page: the AI Overview at the top, and the familiar ranked list underneath. A page can rank first in the traditional results and still be left out of the Overview entirely, or vice versa.

What each rewards

  • Traditional results still lean on classic ranking signals: relevance, backlinks, page experience, and more
  • AI Overviews lean more on whether a page answers the specific question clearly and can be confidently summarized
  • Traditional results show many options. AI Overviews show only a handful of cited sources, so competition for a spot is tighter

Why both still matter

Not every query triggers an AI Overview, and plenty of searchers still scroll past it to the regular results. Optimizing only for one and ignoring the other leaves visibility on the table either way.

Checking your own standing

Search Console shows traditional ranking data but does not clearly separate out AI Overview appearances. The most direct way to check is to run the actual query yourself and see what shows up, or use a tool like QueryTrace that checks AI visibility across models directly.
