How to Get Mentioned by ChatGPT
Getting mentioned by ChatGPT comes down to three things: being findable and readable by AI crawlers, being described clearly and specifically on your own site and by other sources, and getting mentioned favorably enough elsewhere on the web that ChatGPT's training data and any live search it does both point back to you.
1. Make sure your site can actually be read
This sounds basic, but it is the most common failure point. Check your robots.txt file for anything blocking GPTBot or OAI-SearchBot, and check whether your hosting provider blocks AI crawlers at the edge (some do, by default, without telling you). None of the rest of this matters if the crawler cannot reach the page.
2. Say clearly what you do, once, somewhere obvious
Look at your homepage and about page and ask whether a stranger, or a model, could state in one sentence what your product does and who it is for. Vague, benefit heavy language like "empowering teams to do their best work" gives a model nothing concrete to repeat. A plain, specific sentence does.
3. Publish an llms.txt file
This is a small, low effort step that gives models a clean summary of your site to work from instead of guessing. You can generate one for free based on your actual pages.
4. Get named on other sites, not just your own
Models lean heavily on secondhand mentions, comparison articles, review sites, forum threads, and press coverage. If nobody besides you says your product is good at something specific, a model has less reason to believe it and repeat it.
5. Check what is actually happening today
Before changing anything, ask ChatGPT the exact question a customer would ask and see what it says. That tells you whether you are starting from zero or from something worth building on. QueryTrace runs this check for free.
