GEO vs SEO: What Is Actually Different

SEO optimizes for a ranking algorithm that returns a list of links a person clicks through. GEO optimizes for a language model that reads across sources and writes its own answer, sometimes naming a small number of brands directly. The goal shifts from earning a click to earning a mention.

What stays the same

A lot of good SEO practice still applies. Clear writing, real expertise, fast pages, and a site that is not blocked from crawlers all help with both. Neither discipline rewards thin or copied content, and both reward being an actual, trustworthy source of information in your category.

What actually changes

  • Keywords matter less than direct, well phrased answers to specific questions
  • Backlinks still matter, but so does being mentioned favorably on sites the model trusts, even without a link
  • Position on a results page does not exist in the same way. Either the model names you or it does not
  • Structured, extractable content (clear headings, short paragraphs, real numbers) tends to get pulled into answers more than long, marketing heavy pages
  • New surfaces matter, like llms.txt and whether AI crawlers can even reach your site

Do you need to choose one

No. Most of the work overlaps, and a page written clearly for a human reader tends to work reasonably well for both a search ranking algorithm and a language model. The difference is what you measure. Google Search Console tells you about SEO. It tells you nothing about whether ChatGPT mentions you, which is why GEO needs its own kind of check.
