A featured snippet is the highlighted box Google sometimes places above the normal search results, pulling a short, direct answer straight from a webpage along with a link to the source. It is worth understanding because it works a lot like a smaller, older version of what AI answer engines do now, just with one source instead of several blended together.
How Google picks one
Google's system scans pages that already rank well for a query and looks for one that answers it directly and concisely, often in a sentence, a short list, or a small table near the top of the page. There is no way to pay for this placement, and no dedicated tag that guarantees it.
Why it is a useful preview of AI search
Long before ChatGPT or AI Overviews existed, featured snippets already rewarded pages that answered a specific question directly and clearly, instead of pages that buried the answer under a long introduction. - State the direct answer in one or two sentences right after the heading that asks the question

- Avoid vague openers like "there are many factors to consider" before actually answering
