What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO, short for generative engine optimization, is the practice of shaping your content so AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are more likely to mention your brand when someone asks a related question. It is the AI answer version of ranking on Google, but the target is a sentence in a chat response instead of a blue link.

Why GEO exists

More people are asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude for recommendations instead of typing a search into Google and clicking through ten links. When someone asks what is a good project management tool for a small team, the answer they get back either includes your product or it does not. GEO is about improving your odds of being the one it includes.

How it is different from SEO

Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranking algorithm that returns a list of links. GEO optimizes for a language model that reads a bunch of sources, decides what is true and relevant, and writes a short answer in its own words. You are not competing for position one anymore, you are competing to be one of a handful of brands the model chooses to name.

What actually moves the needle

  • Clear, factual pages that state what your product does and who it is for, without burying the point in marketing language
  • Being mentioned by other sites and sources the model already trusts, since models lean on secondhand mentions as much as your own site
  • Making sure AI crawlers can actually read your site (check robots.txt and any bot blocking)
  • Publishing an llms.txt file that gives models a clean summary of your site
  • Structured, specific content over vague brand statements: real comparisons, real numbers, real use cases

How to know if it is working

The only real way to know is to check what AI models actually say when someone asks about your category. Run the same kind of question a customer might ask and see whether your brand shows up, how it is described, and how often. That is exactly what QueryTrace's AI visibility checker does for free, with no signup.
