What Is a Rich Snippet (and How Is It Different From a Featured Snippet)?

A rich snippet is a normal search result that has been enhanced with extra visual details, like a star rating, a price, or a photo, pulled from structured data on the page. It is easy to confuse with a featured snippet, but they are different things: a featured snippet takes over its own box above the results, while a rich snippet is just a regular result with more information attached.

How it is different from a featured snippet

See our guide on what is a featured snippet for the full comparison, but the short version is that a featured snippet gets its own answer box near the top of the page, while a rich snippet is still just one of the normal results, made more useful with added details.

What makes a result eligible

A rich snippet is not something you write directly, it comes from structured data added to the page. A recipe page with proper markup can show a star rating and cook time. A product page can show a price and stock status.

Why it is worth the setup

  • A result with a star rating or a price visibly stands out next to plain results, which tends to raise click through rate
  • The same structured data that earns a rich snippet also makes facts on the page easier for an AI model to read cleanly
  • It costs nothing to add beyond the initial setup, unlike ads
