What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?
AEO, short for answer engine optimization, means writing content so that answer engines (tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews that give a direct answer instead of a list of links) are more likely to pull your content into that answer, often with a citation back to your site.
Answer engines versus search engines
A search engine hands you ten blue links and lets you pick. An answer engine reads across many pages and writes one answer, sometimes with a short list of sources underneath. Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, and Bing's Copilot all work this way. AEO is about earning a spot in that answer, not just a spot on a results page.
AEO and GEO are close cousins
You will often see AEO and GEO used almost interchangeably. The common thread is real: both are about becoming the source a model reaches for, whether that model is answering a search query or a chat message. See our full breakdown in GEO vs AEO if you want the distinction spelled out.
What answer engines look for
- A direct, well phrased answer to a specific question near the top of the page
- Clear structure: headings, short paragraphs, and lists that are easy to extract from
- Original data, examples, or opinions instead of a rehash of what everyone else already wrote
- Pages that load fast and are not blocked from crawlers
A simple way to test it
Ask the exact question your content answers directly into ChatGPT or Perplexity and see what comes back. If your site is not part of the answer, that is a real signal about what to fix, not a hypothetical.
