How Do AI Engines Actually Find and Rank Content?
Google returns a ranked list of links, built mostly from crawling, indexing, and links pointing at a page. AI models work differently. They combine what they learned during training with, in many cases, a live retrieval step, then generate one answer instead of a list. Getting into that answer depends less on rank and more on whether your content is clear enough to be pulled in at all.
Training versus retrieval
Some of what a model like ChatGPT or Claude knows about your brand comes from training data, which is essentially frozen at a point in time. Many AI products also do a live search or retrieval step before answering, pulling in current pages the way a search engine would, then summarizing them. Perplexity and Gemini lean heavily on this live step.
What determines whether you get pulled in
- Whether AI crawlers can actually access your site, which depends on your robots.txt rules
- How clearly a page answers a specific question, since vague marketing copy is harder to extract from
- Whether your brand is mentioned consistently and accurately across other sites the model trusts
- How recent and consistent your information is across your own pages
There is no position one the way Google has it
A ranked list does not really exist inside an AI answer. Either the model names your brand or it does not, and sometimes it names two or three competitors alongside you or instead of you. There is no equivalent of scrolling to page two.
Why this changes what you optimize for
Optimizing for AI answers means optimizing for clarity and trust signals across the wider web, not just for a single page's keyword density. A comparison page that clearly and honestly lays out your strengths and weaknesses against competitors tends to get pulled into answers more than a page that only talks about how great you are.
