How AI Models Decide Which Brands to Recommend

AI models decide which brands to recommend based on a mix of what they learned during training, what they can find through live search if the tool supports it, and how confidently and consistently a brand is described across the sources they have seen. There is no single ranking signal, and no way to pay for a mention.

Training data versus live search

Some AI tools answer purely from what they learned during training, which has a knowledge cutoff and will not reflect anything that happened after that date. Others, like ChatGPT with browsing enabled or Perplexity by default, can search the live web and pull in current pages. Which one you are dealing with changes a lot about what actually influences the answer.

What tends to increase the odds of a mention

  • Being described consistently across many independent sources, not just your own marketing
  • Clear, specific, factual descriptions of what your product does and who it is for
  • Comparison and review content that names you alongside competitors, since a model often draws directly on that kind of content when asked to compare options
  • A site that is actually crawlable, with no accidental blocks on AI bots

What does not help

Keyword stuffing, vague superlatives like "the best solution on the market," and content written for a ranking algorithm instead of a reader tend not to move the needle, since a model is trying to extract an accurate answer, not match a query to a page the way a search engine does.

Why this varies by model

ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude were trained on different data and built by different teams, so they do not always agree. A brand can be well represented in one model's answers and nearly invisible in another's. This is part of why checking just one model gives an incomplete picture.

Seeing it for yourself

The clearest way to understand this is to ask a few AI models a real question about your category and read exactly what they say. QueryTrace does this for free across the major models.
