What Is AI Visibility?
AI visibility is a measure of how often, and how favorably, a brand gets mentioned when people ask AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity for recommendations in its category. Low AI visibility means a real, current customer question is more likely to get answered without your brand ever coming up.
Why it has become something to track
A growing share of buying research now happens inside a chat window instead of a search bar. Someone deciding between tools for their team might just ask an AI model to compare a few options and go with whatever it suggests. If your brand is not part of that answer, you never even get considered, not because you lost, but because you were not in the running.
What makes up AI visibility
- Mention rate: out of a set of realistic customer questions, how often your brand comes up at all
- Sentiment: when you are mentioned, is it favorable, neutral, or a warning
- Position: are you named first, or buried in a list of five options
- Consistency across models: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude do not always agree, so visibility on one does not guarantee visibility on another
How it is measured
The most reliable way is to run the actual questions a buyer would ask, across multiple models, on a regular schedule, and record what comes back. A one time check tells you where you stand today. Tracking it over time tells you whether the work you are doing is actually changing anything.
