What Is Search Intent?
Search intent is the real reason behind a search, the goal a person actually has, separate from the specific words they typed to get there. Someone searching best CRM for small teams is not looking for a definition, they are ready to compare options, and a page that misreads that gets ignored no matter how well it is written.
The four common types
- Informational: the person wants to learn something, like what is a backlink
- Navigational: the person is trying to reach a specific site or page
- Commercial: the person is comparing options before deciding, like best project management tools
- Transactional: the person is ready to act, like buy or sign up
Why matching it matters more than matching keywords
A page can use the exact right words and still fail if it answers the wrong question, like a product page ranking for a search where the person actually wanted a plain explanation first.
How this applies to AI answers
A model reads a query for the same underlying intent a search engine does, then decides what kind of source to pull from: a definition, a comparison, or a direct recommendation. Writing content that clearly matches one intent, instead of vaguely trying to cover all of them, makes it easier for a model to know when to reach for your page.
