What Is Internal Linking?
Internal linking is the practice of linking from one page on your site to another page on the same site. It sounds too simple to matter, but it is one of the more overlooked levers in both traditional SEO and how easily an AI crawler can find and understand everything you have published.
What it does
- Helps a crawler discover pages it might otherwise miss, especially new ones with no other links pointing to them yet
- Spreads authority from your strongest pages to related, weaker ones
- Signals which pages you consider closely related, through the pages and anchor text you choose to link
A common mistake
Many sites link heavily to the homepage and almost nowhere else, leaving deeper pages, like glossary or guide content, orphaned with no internal links pointing to them at all. An orphaned page is harder for both a search crawler and an AI crawler to find.
A simple habit that helps
Every time you publish a new page, spend a few minutes linking to it from two or three existing, related pages, and use descriptive anchor text rather than click here. This one habit does more for discoverability than most technical fixes.
