What Is a Knowledge Cutoff?

A knowledge cutoff is the date up to which an AI model's training data goes. Anything that happened, launched, or changed after that date is invisible to the model unless it has live browsing turned on, which makes it one of the most common and most fixable reasons a real brand does not show up in an AI answer yet.

Why models have a cutoff at all

Training a large model takes real time, and the data it learns from has to be frozen at some point before the model is released. Everything the model knows on its own, without searching, comes from before that date.

What it means for your brand

If your company launched, rebranded, or changed its name after a model's cutoff, that model has never seen it during training. No amount of good content on your site today changes what it already learned, unless the model can search the live web when it answers.

How to tell if live browsing is the workaround

  • ChatGPT with browsing or search enabled, Perplexity by default, and Gemini's search grounding can all pull in pages published after the training cutoff
  • A model answering purely from memory, with no search step involved, cannot see anything past its cutoff date

What to actually do about it

Make sure your site is crawlable and clearly written so that when a model does browse, it finds something usable. Cutoffs also move forward every time a model gets retrained, so the same groundwork that helps you get mentioned today keeps paying off as newer versions catch up.

Checking whether this is actually your problem

Ask a model the same question with browsing off and with it on, if you can toggle it, and compare the answers. A big gap between the two points straight at a knowledge cutoff issue. QueryTrace runs this kind of check for free.
