Do I Need Both SEO and GEO or Just One?

Almost every business needs both, because customers are not switching from Google to ChatGPT all at once, they are splitting their research across both. The real question is not which one to pick, it is which one to prioritize first given your budget, and that depends on where your specific buyers already spend their time.

When to lean toward SEO first

If most of your traffic still comes from Google, if you sell something people search for by exact product name, or if your category has strong local search intent (plumbers, dentists, restaurants), classic SEO still does most of the heavy lifting. Google is not going away, and Google itself now shows AI Overviews, so good SEO already touches part of the AI surface.

When to lean toward GEO first

If your buyers are researchers who ask open ended questions before they know what product they want (software categories, comparison heavy purchases, "best tool for X" type decisions), they are increasingly asking ChatGPT or Perplexity that question directly instead of typing it into Google. If you cannot find your brand in those answers today, that is lost demand you are not even aware of.

A budget rule that works for most teams

  • Keep your existing SEO spend, since good SEO content usually helps GEO too
  • Add a monthly check of what AI models actually say about your brand before spending anything new
  • Only add a dedicated GEO budget once you can see a real gap between what you offer and what AI models currently say
