Is My Website Ready for GEO Optimization?

Most websites are not fully ready, but not for dramatic reasons. The usual gaps are simple: AI crawlers accidentally blocked, no llms.txt file, pages written for persuasion instead of direct answers, and no idea what AI models currently say about the brand. Fixing those four things covers most of the readiness work.

Quick checklist

  • Check robots.txt for accidental blocks on GPTBot, Google-Extended, and other AI crawlers
  • Confirm your site loads fast and is not gated behind logins or heavy JavaScript that hides the real content
  • Look at your top pages and ask whether the actual answer appears in the first two sentences
  • Search your brand name plus your main product terms in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and see what comes back today
  • Check whether you have any structured data (FAQ schema, product schema) that helps machines parse the page

What "not ready" usually looks like

Pages that open with a paragraph about the company history before answering the question, thin or duplicated content across many near identical pages, and a total absence of mentions anywhere outside your own website. None of these require a rebuild, they require editing.

What "ready" looks like

A site that is crawlable, loads fast, answers real questions directly, and already has some presence in reviews or third party mentions is most of the way there. From that point, GEO work is about expanding coverage and fixing gaps, not starting from zero.
