What llms.txt Does and Whether You Need One
You do not strictly need an llms.txt file, since it is a new and still lightly adopted standard, but it is cheap to add, cannot hurt, and gives AI models a clean, direct summary of your site instead of leaving them to guess. For most sites, especially ones with a lot of pages, it is worth the small effort.
What it actually does
It is a plain text file at the root of your site, yoursite.com/llms.txt, that summarizes what your company does and links to your most important pages, each with a short explanation. It gives a model a shortcut past the noise of a full site crawl.
When it matters more
- Sites with a lot of pages, where it is genuinely hard for a model to know which ones matter most
- Sites where the homepage does not clearly state what the product does in plain language
- Companies actively trying to improve AI visibility, where every low cost signal is worth adding
When it matters less
A small, simple site where the homepage already states clearly and specifically what the product is gets less added benefit, since there is less ambiguity for the file to resolve in the first place. It is still cheap enough to add anyway.
The honest caveat
Not every AI provider has confirmed it actually reads llms.txt files, and adoption is still early. Think of it as a small, close to free addition to a broader AI visibility effort, not a fix on its own.
